Boning


Boning is plastic or metal strips used to support or stiffen a garment. Traditionally, boning was used in corsetry. the purpose of boning in corsetry varies from era to era. generally the cinching and shaping properties puts strain on the fabric from which the corset is made.the boning supports the desired shape and prevents wrinkles in the fabric. Early corsets were stiffened using reed or whale bone.During the 19century, materials such as wood, ivory and bone were used.
today many corsets are made with nylon or rigilene boning.
boning can also be used for stabilising square necklines and shaping waists.
