Layering is combining different garments in layers to create a variety of looks.
Dressing in layers first became popular in the 1960s and 70's, when the "Bohemian" look became fashionable.
Since then Layering has been a reoccurring fashion trend, and is a popular staple look for Autumn/Winter among designs such as Christian Lacroix and Missoni.
