Pleating

Pleat- A fold made in the fabric by double ling it and stitching over.
there are several different types of pleating.
Knife Pleat-these pleats have a 3.1 inch ratio of fabric which will create a 1inch thick pleat. knife pleats are recognised by the way they overlap at the seam.
box pleat- knife pleats back to back, these spring out from the waistline.they have the same ratio as knife pleats but have a bulkier seam.commonly used in school skirts.
inverted pleat-these pleats have a 'Box' on the inside rather than the outside.
projecting pleat-These are folds lifted from the surface of the fabric and arranged so they stand out from the fabric itself.
Accordion pleat-these are made by folding fabric alternately in and out creating projecting pleats.this kind of pleat is commonly used for smocking.
Wrinkled Pleats-this consists of irregular ridges made by securing damp fabric and leaving it to dry.when dry the folds lye down in all directions.
